Moxi - Hailuogou Glacier
Located 300km south-west of Chengdu, Moxi has become a tourist town, with the major attraction being the Hailuogou Glacier Park. Lying on the edge of a rugged Daxue Mountain Range, itβs also an area of outstanding natural beauty. Tallest peak is Gongga Mountain - known in Tibetan as Minya Konka β which rises to an impressive 7,556m. Interestingly, a century ago, National Geographic almost announced it the world tallest after explorers miscalculated their readings and estimated the summit to be over 9,000m asl. Suspicious, the magazine waited on a more reliable calculation, and although that gave a real height that stripped it of a dubious world pole position, it can still rank as highest peak east of the Himalayas, higher than any peak in Andes and dwarfing anything found in Europe. Lying on the edge of the Daxue Mountains, Hailuogou park allows visitors to climb up to a height where you can view a glacier landscape. Entry is by bus, with drives a route through alpine forest until the top terminus, where you can take a cable car to a viewing area for the glacier. Be warned that this is a popular destination and during holiday and other peak periods it can be packed with noisy tourist groups.
There is presently just one, rather expensive hotel within the actual park, but outside there are a huge number of a accommodation choices β ranging from youth hostel type dormitory to expensive boutique. The town, where the most hotels are found, has grown up around the tourist trade and is where the ticket office, and park bus station are situated. There are also hotels outside town and, on the road up to the main park gate, there is a popular hot-spring complex.

The area, like Wolong, is a gateway to Tibet β and the road leading west from Moxi will take you to Kangding and then up onto the Tibetan Plateau. This area is also very scenic and worth a visit
